Common moorhen and serenity.
The common gallinule, or common moorhen, is one of the most common birds of European rivers and lakes. For most of the day, they stand on the shore, hidden among the vegetation or walking through it in search of stems of aquatic plants, grass shoots, or invertebrates, and only early in the morning or at dusk it is possible to see them in open waters. That is why we can rarely observe their striking and colorful legs, which have very long fingers, very useful to move over the framework of reeds and branches that partially cover the waterfronts.

The bears of the birch forest, Finland (6).
After a long afternoon wait in the hide, finally the big she-bear appeared, accompanied by her three cubs. They were born the same year in January, as my guide told me. It was a hot August evening in the Finnish taiga, in the Russian border that is famous because there it inhabits the mythical brown bear. So hot, and with an air so still, that our human stench flooded the area, so when from the birch forest finally appeared this family of bears, the mother sniffed the air and waved to its offspring that they had careful not to turn away from her. It was very exciting. So we took extreme caution making as little noise as possible and enjoyed watching the cubs playing on the glade.

The coot is a nice and easily observable species in the habitats it occupies, but almost always it is seen swimming on calm lakes and rivers. Which makes little people know about its beautiful and colorful legs, which are only observable when out of water, mostly well hidden among the reeds.

The fishing
Lake Baringo, in Kenya, is a paradise for bird lovers, with over 470 species of them, some of which are easy to observe. One of the stars is the African fish eagle, of which there are several nests located along the various islets in this huge lake. It is exciting to watch and photograph this bird at the time it hunts a fish in the lake after lunging toward its prey having flown from its high vantage point at the trees of an island.
The madness is that I took this photo very early in the morning, with a very dim light. Thus, although the picture would be difficult to take as I tried to capture a very fast and short action with low light, the background could be very interesting, without great brightness or contrast, very uniform and blue. In this composition also helped the small water drops caused by the eagle action.FalconiformesHaliaeetus vociferafrican fish eagleanimalanimalsaveavesbirdbirdsfalconiformepigargo africanovertebradovertebratavertebrate

Fighting rhinos
The two species of African rhinos, white and black, are seriously threatened and its population has been drastically reduced because they have been, and still are, valuable hunting trophies (among other reasons, for their coveted horns). Both have been reintroduced in various parts of equatorial Africa, as these specimens of white rhino in Lake Nakuru, Kenya.
Occasionally the males fight each other out of boredom, or because a near female is close to mating season, which it can occur at any time of year. As when I noticed this couple of large males holding an exhibition of power between them.Ceratotherium simumanimalanimalsmammalmammaliamamíferorhinorinoceronte blancosquarelipped rhinocerovertebradovertebratavertebratewhite rhinocero

Flamingos dance
Having arrived very early at Lake Nakuru for bird watching, it was a great pleasure to put myself standing quietly on the shore and watch the comings and goings of flocks of flamingos. The Lesser Flamingo was once very numerous in this area but its population have been seriously affected in recent years by heavy metal poisoning and other threats. It is a species included in the AEWA agreement, and I hope they will recover in the future, but the threats they face (human activity) are difficult to combat.
I observed a tonal consistency for the background, offered by the lake water and, over the horizon, the distant morning mist, so I tried a simple high-key photograph of the flamingos, contrasted with the black parts of their plumage and beak, being the pink of them the only additional tonal component in the picture.PhoenicopteriformePhoenicopterus minoranimalanimalsaveavesbirdbirdsfenicopteriformeflamenco enanoflamingolesser flamingovertebradovertebratavertebrate

Lioness in the breeze
Lioness at Maasai Mara (Kenya).
That day, I noticed that the grass was swaying in the breeze, which, coupled with the dim light, allowed me to try a somewhat long exposure hoping to get a background of "soft" grass for the lioness, awaiting the moment when she stayed still for the shot, creating what I considered a fair portrait of this beautiful animal.Panthera leoanimalanimalsfemale lionleón africanoleón africano hembralionlionessmammalmammaliamamíferovertebradovertebratavertebrate

Cheetah love
A copple of cheetahs in heat. During the time I was searching for this photograph, I was really amazed by the bridal behavior of these cheetahs, very "human" so to speak. It looked like a couple really in love the way that humans do. For a long time they were pampering and smacking each other, moving along a large plain area until finally they hid themselves behind some bushes, far away. I decided not to bother them, and I just take a picture from the distance using the maximum focal I had available. In addition, the bushes and green tones suggested a beautiful vertical composition for this couple in love.

This series of photographs were taken very early in the morning, in Maasai Mara, with a magnificent light, when silence and solitude rules, no tourists at that time. There was the herd of lions, and it was a pleasure to watch how the puppies played, under the watchful eye of adult females. Two large males accompanied them. Occasionally, females came to pick up the pups so they would not leave the area, so immersed in their games they were. The cubs played one with each other, rolling around, playing even with "toys" (some bones), they were preparing themselves for adulthood, as these games will help them in learning how to hunt. What I observed in both young and adult lions was a very "familiar" behavior, very "human", and I realized how much we seem us, homo sapiens, to these other mammals. The dim morning side light made these lions and their fur and manes shine with their more intense colors, in harmony with the tones of the savannah. Best of all was the silence and loneliness that accompanied this experience, when you feel like a privileged spectator at the forefront of this event of nature. (1/22)

Vultures quarrel
When the wildebeest great migration arrive to Masai Mara, the area becomes a haven for large predators, having lot of food available, but not just for them. Rüppell´s vultures feed almost exclusively on carrion left by the animals that hunt preys. They always feed in groups, which also bind white-backed vultures (Gyps africanus) and very often a marabou stork (Leptoptilos crumeniferus) . Then it can be observed the vultures` unique and colorful fights between them when approaching the carcass to eat, although there is usually enough food for everyone. (2/3)
