In Costa Rica abound different species of semi-aquatic freshwater turtles, as this pleasant black river turtle (Rhinoclemmys funerea), a resident of the flooded swamps of Tortuguero. The black river turtle is native to Central America, and can be found from Honduras to Panama, being one of the favorite “dishes” of caimans and crocodiles. They are also subject of rituals by indigenous communities of Costa Rica.
